Dental implants are one of the most common interventions carried out at leading dental practices around the world and the most enduring way to replace lost teeth. In recent years, implants have become a popular alternative to dentures, both for aesthetic and for practical reasons.
Since the fitting of dental implants requires surgery, it is understandable that some patients may feel a bit apprehensive about undergoing the whole procedure. If you have been recommended dental implants as the most suitable alternative, make sure you discuss your concerns with Dr. Samir. In the meantime, you may want to read some general information on what to expect during a dental implant procedure.
Because implants are fitted into the jaw bone of the patient, it is important to ensure that the bone is healthy and strong enough to support them. Working closely with an implant specialist, Dr. Samir can assess the overall health of your jaw bones by taking X-rays or using specialised dental imaging machines. right here in our city practice. Once the suitability of the jaw bone is confirmed and the treatment fully explained an appointment can be made for the placement of your implants.
On the day of surgery, the specialist will give you a local anaesthetic to numb the gum area. If you are feeling particularly apprehensive, you may be given a mild sedative too. Next, the surgeon will insert the root implants (usually titanium rods) into the gum. You may also be fitted with a temporary bridge and given some stitches. Usually, the procedure takes one hour for a single tooth and up to four hours for a whole mouth. You will most likely be prescribed painkillers and anti-inflammatories to help you get through the post-op period, along with a special mouthwash.
You will then need to wait until the area has healed completely. This may take anything up to three months. Once your dental team is satisfied with the healing process, individually crafted artifical teeth (crowns or dentures) will be attached to the metal roots implanted earlier. That is the final stage of the dental implant procedure.
